Selling Safety Tips for Online Marketplaces

Almost every marketplace transaction is smooth. The few that aren't tend to follow the same patterns — and you can avoid them with a handful of simple habits. Here's how to stay safe when selling on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, and other peer-to-peer platforms.

Meet in public whenever possible

For small items, never give out your home address. Meet at a busy public spot — a grocery store parking lot during the day, a bank lobby, or a designated "safe exchange zone" at a local police station. Many police departments now offer these spots with cameras and lighting.

For large furniture or appliances that require pickup at your home, meet the buyer in the driveway or lobby — not inside the house. Have the item ready to go.

Bring a friend

Especially for higher-value items, evening meetups, or first-time platforms you've never used. Even just having someone visible in the car nearby changes the dynamic. At minimum, tell someone where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to be back.

Accept safe payment only

  • Cash is safest for local pickup. Count it in front of the buyer before they leave. Larger bills — check for the watermark.
  • Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App work for in-person — confirm the funds landed in your account, not just a screenshot, before handing over the item.
  • Platform checkout (eBay, Mercari, Poshmark) protects you for shipped items — never ship a "platform" sale off-platform.
  • Never accept personal checks, money orders, cashier's checks, or "overpayment" requests. All are classic scams.
  • Never share your bank login, Zelle PIN, or any verification code — including ones the "buyer" claims they sent you.

Common scams in 2026

A small number of patterns account for most marketplace scams. If you recognize them, you can hang up before getting burned.

  • The Google Voice verification scam. "I just want to make sure you're real — I'll text you a code, can you read it back?" The code creates a Google Voice account in your name. Never read out any code.
  • The overpayment scam. A "buyer" sends a fake check or transfer for more than asking, then asks you to refund the difference. The original payment bounces days later.
  • The shipping address swap. Buyer wants to pay extra and have you ship to a different country. Usually paired with a stolen card.
  • The "I'll pay through Zelle Business" pivot. There's no such thing. They want your bank credentials.
  • Too-fast acceptance. Buyer offers full price with no questions, urgency, and a complicated payment plan. Walk away.
  • Off-platform pivots. Match on eBay or Mercari, buyer asks to complete the deal via text or WhatsApp. This voids your buyer protection.

Shipping safely

  • Always use tracked shipping with delivery confirmation.
  • For items over $50, add signature confirmation.
  • Buy insurance for items over $100.
  • Photograph the packed item, the label, and the box before it leaves your hands — proof in case of an "Item Not As Described" dispute.
  • Never ship to a different address than the one the platform shows.

Protect your account

  • Enable two-factor authentication on every selling platform.
  • Use a unique password — not the one you reuse everywhere.
  • Be suspicious of "platform support" emails asking you to log in. Go directly to the site or app.
  • Don't share your phone number publicly in the listing if you can avoid it — use the platform's messaging instead.

Trust your gut

If a buyer feels off, cancel. There's always another buyer. The few minutes you save by ignoring a red flag aren't worth the headache of a fraudulent transaction, a chargeback, or worse. Most sellers who get scammed say afterward, "I knew something was wrong but went through with it anyway." Don't be that seller.
